Vegetable seeds are very useful gifts. However, there are some points you need to consider. Ugandan's save seeds from the vegetables they grow to plant at the next growing season. Therefore, hybrid seeds should not be included in gift boxes as the vegetables they produce, while true to packaging for one growing season, will not produce usable seed for the next. The whole process of hybridizing controls pollination to produce a desired hybrid for only one season. Folks who grow hybrid vegetables must buy new seed each year. Therefore, non-hybrid also called heirloom seeds, can be used planting season after planting season with good results. One final point, Ugandan Customs Regulation do not allow out of date seeds to be brought into Uganda so make certain the expiration date is at least six months forward. There are plenty of non-hybrid seed available and will be much appreciated by families in Uganda. Some suggestions are below.
